Four Paws
Composting solutions for the Ninh Bình bear sanctuary
About the project
The bear sanctuary run by Four Paws in Ninh Bình, Northern Vietnam works to take care of bears which have been rescued from the bear bile trade providing them with food and medicine to live a comfortable life in the sanctuary. One of the issues which they were facing in recent years was the disposal of the excess food waste created by the bears. They had a composting system in place which wasn’t working for them, and so they came to Đom Đóm Farm for help.
In this one day workshop the team learn the basics of composting theory, and together made a compost pile with banana trunks, food waste, leaves and grass (common materials the bear sanctuary often has to deal with). The team had the chance to ask questions to solve common problems they encountered when composting, such as rodents, smells and excess liquids.
