Multi-Stage Stream Water Filtration & Purification System
Objective: Engineered and deployed a robust, decentralized multi-barrel filtration system to process raw upland stream water into safe drinking and domestic water for a rural homestead, ensuring year-round water security beyond seasonal rainwater harvesting.
Challenges: The primary challenges included managing agricultural and organic runoff from upstream farming communities, eliminating heavy metals and chemical pollutants without toxic plastic leaching, maintaining gravity-fed hydraulic pressure across tanks, and mitigating residual bacterial pathogens (such as E. coli).
Technical Solutions & Implementation
Modular HDPE Barrel Architecture: Constructed a multi-tank filtration array using separate 200L high-density polyethylene barrels for distinct media stages (limestone gravel, 1-2mm quartz sand, and coconut shell activated charcoal). This modular layout ensures straightforward maintenance and media replacement every 2–3 years, protected by a dedicated UV-shielding roof structure.
Laboratory Certification: Submitted treated water samples to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology for formal testing against national drinking water standards (QCVN 6-1:2010/BYT), which verified 100% removal of heavy metals (arsenic, lead) and chemical contaminants.
Hydraulics & Secondary Purification: Integrated a smart float-valve system requiring a 1-meter elevation head differential to maintain seamless gravity-fed water transfer. To address residual microbiological risks (E. coli and coliforms) inherent to natural sand filters, a secondary indoor SWACF filter unit was added for direct potability.
Precision Installation: Implemented strict fabrication protocols, utilizing hole-saw drilling and food-grade silicone sealing for leak-proof pipe fittings, alongside an intensive multi-day media-washing protocol to eliminate fine particulates and prevent system clogging.
