Composting, bokashi & waste disposal in the city
About the project
For this project, Đom Đóm was assigned the task of creating a workshop for university students focused on composting and waste disposal solutions for the city. In urban populations, the issue of food waste disposal can be a serious problem for municipal hygiene as well as environmental pollution.
As the next generation of businessman and leaders, these university students got their hands dirty creating bokashi buckets, bokashi bran and worm bins as potential grass-roots solutions for urban food waste. This was a great opportunity for students to think of new solutions to environmental problems in the city context.

Bokashi & vermiculture
Bokashi is a Japanese method of fermentation using lactobacillus and other beneficial anaerobic bacteria to break down food waste with minimal odor. In this session, students made their own bokashi bran with rice bran and rice husks, and inoculated it with lactobacillus bacteria.
They then learn how to maintain the buckets, use the bokashi ‘tea’ to fertilizer their plants, and then how to incorporate vermicompost worms into their food waste system. After the food has fermented for 2-3 weeks, it can be fed to the worms to be quickly broken down and turn into black gold for the garden.
